## Position Summary

The Director of Digital Services is a senior member of the leadership team in the Office of Communications and Marketing, reporting to the Vice President for Communications and Marketing. This individual will be responsible for building a digital services team and developing and implementing strategies that put Middlebury at the forefront in higher education for digital innovation and excellence in its operations. S/he will lead a team that brings together expertise in digital technologies; user experience and web design; interactive marketing tools and processes; analytics; and project, account, and vendor management.
The work of the team will support the Office's efforts to build the Middlebury brand and related brands of its schools and programs globally, and to advance the institution's goal of increasing awareness and understanding in key markets and populations. The director will partner closely with Marketing and Creative services team within the Office of Communications and Marketing in ensuring that brand positioning and messaging are translated well across all digital platforms and that we build and nurture effective platforms to distribute content.
The director will work collaboratively with many offices and organizations at Middlebury, including, but not limited, to those engaged in admissions, academic initiatives, student life, alumni relations, fundraising, community relations, and internal and external communications.
The director will play a lead role in helping to create a common ethos to guide Middlebury social media initiatives.
## Essential Functions
Build and lead a team that will set strategy and drive continuous innovation across Middlebury's public presence on the web.
Support a distributed group of web editors to improve usability, design and content of all Middlebury websites.
Lead the direction and implementation of a data-driven interactive marketing capability that can be leveraged across the institution for lead generation and conversion.
Analyze department marketing plans and recommend and help implement online programs that will help achieve desired objectives.
Regularly test, measure and report on performance and cost of marketing initiatives to improve return on investment and performance against KPIs.
Ensure alignment between the digital marketing strategy and the overall marketing strategy of the institution through close collaboration with the Marketing & Creative Services team; ensure that brand standards are used consistently across sites and campaigns.
Create and manage a plan for a transition to new site architecture and design that will meet the broad needs of the institution and serve as a platform for best-in-class interactive marketing across the institution.
Oversee strategy and management of Middlebury's mobile and tablet app platforms.
## General Responsibilities
Work collaboratively with Middlebury's IT organization to ensure alignment of goals and support for desired technologies.
Evaluate emerging technologies and provide thought leadership and perspective for adoption where appropriate.
Regularly measure and report on website performance.
Develop and enhance relationships with partners and digital agencies.
## Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Thought leadership and a passion for applying emerging digital and interactive technologies and best practices in an academic environment, including on mobile devices, to widen the spectrum of digital offerings.
Strong understanding of current online marketing concepts, strategies and best practices.
Strong problem solving and analytical capabilities specific to interactive marketing programs and lead generation.

The ability to communicate complex topics to non-specialists with little technical and marketing experience or knowledge.

Experience with Drupal and Wordpress CMS platforms.
Experience managing SEO, SEM and PPC programs.
Experience with database marketing and CRM platforms. ( experience would be particularly relevant.)
Experience managing email-marketing campaigns.
Experience optimizing landing pages and running A/B and multivariate experiments.
Demonstrated understanding of social-media marketing and content marketing strategies and tactics.
Working knowledge of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript development.
Experience with form-factor agnostic web design techniques (e.g. text flows, media queries, dialogues, etc.)
## Experience
Minimum of 10 years experience in web technologies and interactive marketing, either on the client or agency side, with increasing responsibilities over that time.
